Do you have what it takes to compete in the IBRU Fantasy Draught for a chance at awards, prize money and brewing glory?
The Fantasy Draught is a unique competition that challenges each brewer's creativity, resourcefulness, recipe creation skills, and brewing acumen. In this competition you will draft your ingredients from an ever dwindling list of pre-determined items, and you'll create your beer using ONLY the ingredients you selected during the draft. The winners will be determined at the annual IBRU Summer Cookout.

Rules for the Draught
- Please Observe Confidentiality - Once the draft is complete, please do not discuss your beer with anyone - even other participants. Absolutely no chatter about your style, ingredients, beer name, or ANY other brew details.
- =====
- The Draught is an in-person event. Everyone must be able to participate in the draft at the same time. Potential virtual participation options may be available.
- A randomized draft order will be determined and announced prior to draft.
- We will have a snake (or serpentine) draft, wherein the first round of the draft will involve each brewer making a draft selection in turn, in order of the draft. At the conclusion of that first round, the draft order will reverse, or "snake", in the opposite direction. This back and forth order will continue each round until the draft is complete.
- There are eight ingredient slots per brewer so there are eight rounds in this draft.
- Each brewer must finish the draft with a full slate of eight drafted items.
- =====
- When a brewer drafts an ingredient they gain the right (and responsibilty) to use that ingredient.
- Once an ingredient is selected it will be removed from the selection list of available items. Some ingredients appear multiple times on the list.
- Draft sheets will be provided so everyone can track the items selected during the draft.
- Draft selections are final once they are announced unless the pick is invalid for some reason.
- Trading ingredients or draft picks is not allowed at this time.
- It is the brewer's responsibility to source any drafted ingredients; IBRU is not supplying any ingredients.
- =====
- Please Observe Confidentiality - Once the draft is complete, please do not discuss your beer with anyone - even other participants. Absolutely no chatter about your style, ingredients, beer name, or ANY other brew details.
Recipe Slots
- Each recipe is comprised of eight recipe slots which are made up of the following five ingredient categories:
- Base Malt (1 slot)
- Yeast (1 slot)
- Hops (must fill a minimum of 2 hop slots)
- Specialty Grain (must fill 1 specialty grain slot)
- Open Ingredient Slot (3 slots available for any available hop, specialty grain or adjunct)
- =====
- Each brewer is limited to a single base malt and a single yeast selection.
- Open Ingredient Slots may be filled with any ingredient from the list except a base malt or yeast. Multiple hops and specialty malt options will be available.
Brew Rules
- ONLY ingredients selected during the Draft can be used in the brew.
- EVERY ingredient selected during the Draft must be used in the brew.
- The brewer can use as much of any drafted ingredient as desired as long as there is some of the ingredient included.
- Any style of beer is fine as long as the jockey boxes are not exposed to any beer that might require extra or specialized cleaning, like sours, brett beers, etc.
- The use of “Incidental Ingredients” (defined specifically as water salts, fining agents and anti-foamers) is allowed. If there are any questions about this please ask first!
- The use of any ingredients besides those obtained during the draft or identified in the Incidental Ingredients list is strictly prohibited.
Basic Strategy
- Some ingredients will be in higher demand or be more scarce than others; participants should consider closely which items they may want to prioritize during the draft.
- Successful brewers will be flexible and willing to adjust on the fly as ingredients come off the Board.
- Brewers drafting an item will need to include that item in their recipe so don't draft anything you can't source.
- Anyone planning to brew an extract beer will need to draft accordingly.
